Vera L. Calhoun Russell, 108, of Villa Ridge, Illinois, passed away Thursday, November 30, 2017, 11:35 p.m. at her residence.

She was a member of Love Joy Freewill Baptist Church in Villa Ridge, Illinois. She served as a Sunday School teacher, president of the Missionary, church trustee and served on the Mother's Board.

She was a retired educator of the Chicago, Illinois School System.

She is survived by three daughters , Linda Williams, Detroit MI , Helen Nevings, Marion, IL , Janice Couch, Villa Ridge, IL; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins .

She was preceded in death by her husband Paul L. Russell, her parents Ralph Calhoun and Pearl Gilbert Calhoun, one son, Jesse Maxwell, four brothers, and three sisters.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 9, 2017, 1:00 p.m., at St. Paul African Methodist Episcopal Church of Mounds, IL, with Reverend Gloria F. Hayes officiating.

Burial will follow on Monday, December 11, 2017, 11:30 a.m., in Mound City National Cemetery of Mound City, IL.

Friends may also call at the church on Saturday from 11:00 am until the funeral hour.
