Dr. Steven H. Jones , age 79 years, 2 months, and 8 days, departed from this earthly life on Friday, March 24, 2023, 7:08 a.m. at Jackson Purchase Medical Center.

Dr. Jones born in Pontiac, Michigan on January 16, 1944, he fostered his love of learning by earning a doctoral degree in Anthropology from Washington University in St. Louis, MO. He later became a professor at Murray State University and served as Chair of the Department of Sociology/Anthropology for thirty-five years.

Dr. Jones was of the Muslim faith and was a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity.

Among his many passions was a love of reading. He enjoyed reading a wide variety of material, including the news, and even found time to relax by fishing, doing a little yard work, and listening to Reggae music. In his younger days he enjoyed playing pool. He was a track and field fanatic and absolutely loved Murray State University.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert Jones and Mayme Lynn (Deberry) Jones, and one brother, Bucky Jones.

Dr. Jones leaves to cherish his memories: His Wife, Benetta Jones of Mayfield; Four Daughters, Barbara (Kevin) Harris of Michigan, Jessalyn Jones of Dallas, TX, Nicole Jones of Mayfield, KY, and Stephanie Jones of Louisville, KY; Seven Grandchildren , Kevin (Cade) Harris and Anya Harris, both of Michigan, Jordan Schofield, Timothy Brown, Jr. and Zayonna Brown, all of Mayfield, KY and Jaylon Dixon and Sydney Dixon, both of Louisville, KY.

Visitation will be held on Friday, March 31, 2023, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Pettus Rowland Funeral Home.

Graveside services are scheduled for Saturday, April 1, 2023, 1:00 p.m. at Oak Rest Cemtery in Mayfield, Kentucky.
