Harvey, Sr., Wardelle G. (June 12, 1926 – July 8, 2014)
On Tuesday, July 8, 2014, at 6:25 p.m., Rev. Dr. Wardelle G. Harvey, Sr., retired pastor of New Greater Love Missionary Baptist Church, civil rights activist, and politician, breathed his last breath on earth. After a brief hospitalization, he died peaceably, at the age of 88.
Born in Boonville, IN, Dr. Harvey achieved much during his lifetime. In addition to his many theological and divinity degrees, he was an avid activist and believer in the rights of everyone regardless of race. Because of his great and diligent work in civil rights, he was an inductee into the Kentucky Civil Rights Hall of Fame in 2000. In addition to this honor, the following achievements were among his numerous honors: The Martin Luther King, Jr. Legacy Award, the Curlee Brown Award, and the Friend of Jerusalem Award.
Some of Dr. Harvey's achievements in his community and the state are as follows: Paducah City Commissioner, Mayor Pro-Tem, member of several boards, such as the Paducah Housing Board and the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant Board, and Duke of Paducah and a Kentucky Colonel.
Dr. Harvey was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. Elmer Harvey, Sr. and Mrs. Inez Harvey Washington; one brother, Mr. Elmer Harvey, Jr.; two sisters, Mrs. Emily Harvey-Washington and Ms. Marian Green. Also, his wife, Mrs. Christine Peterson Harvey, who worked tirelessly by his side, passed away October 24, 2009.
Dr. Harvey is survived by three children: Rev. Jeanette Harvey, Ms. Dionne Jones, and Mr. Wardelle Harvey, Jr. Also surviving Dr. Harvey are three grandchildren: Rev. Jonathan J. McReynolds (Princess), Ms. Whitney Waters, and David R. Waters (Alexandra); four great-grandchildren; and his sister, Ms. Willa M. Lewis.
Funeral services for Dr. Harvey will be conducted at the New Greater Love Missionary Baptist Church, 1249 North 12th Street in Paducah, KY on Monday, July 14, 2014. Public visitation will be held from 3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. At 5:00 p.m. Masonic rites will be conducted and funeral services will commence at 7:00 p.m. Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 15,2014 at the Oak Grove Cemetery.
