Loraine Mathis, 95, Paducah, passed away Saturday, October 12, 2013, 11:15 am at her residence in Paducah.
She was a member of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School, was church youth director, member and youth advisor for the NAACP, served with the Human Rights Commission and was chairperson of numerous church, civic and community events.
She graduated from Lincoln High School and earned her B. S. Degree in Adult Education. Ms. Mathis was a former employee with the Paducah Board of Education. She was a Duchess of Paducah, and a Kentucky Colonel and was selected to serve as a member of the first Board of Directors for the W.C. Young Community Center.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Allen Mathis, two sons, Don Allen Mathis, and George Alvin Mathis, her parents, Michael and Ethel Coleman, three sisters, and two brothers.
She is survived by: two daughters, Maurice Lajune Crouse, Columbia, MD and Janet Loraine Roberts, Paducah, KY; three sons, Charles Douglas Mathis, Brownstown, MI, Archie Lee Mathis, Louisville, KY, and Keith Cordell Mathis, San Diego, CA, one sister, Ella Elizabeth Gardner, Chicago, IL; 14 Grandchildren; 16 Great Grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Funeral services are scheduled for 11:00 AM Saturday, October 19, 2013 at Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church Reverend Michael Wade Officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery in Paducah.
The family will receive visitors at the church on Saturday, October 19, 2013 at 10:00 AM until the funeral hour.
