Funeral service for Leo Motley, 82, Brookport, Illinois,will be Friday, January 4, 2008, 1:00 P.M. at Pettus-Rowland Funeral Home. Reverend Lawrence James and Reverend Michael Pryor will officiate, and burial will follow at Masonic Cemetery, in Metropolis, Illinois with military
rites conducted.
Mr. Motley died of natural causes on Thursday, December 27, 2007, at Massac Memorial Hos-pital, in Metropolis, Illinois, at 4:10 P.M.
Friends may call at Pettus-Rowland Funeral Home on Friday from 11:00 A.M. until the funeral hour.
Mr. Motley was a member of Unity Missionary Baptist Church of Brookport, IL where he had served as deacon and both Superintendent and Teacher of the Sunday School. He was also the first black elected mayor of Brookport, Illinois and a member of the Free and Accepted Masons, Prince Hall Affiliated of Alabama. Mr. Motley was also a US Army Veteran, serving during World War II.
In 1992, Mr. Motley was one of six persons in the four-state area to be honored with the pres-tigious Jefferson Award sponsored by WPSD-TV. He will be remembered for his many contributions to the community including his role in establishing and operating the Brookport Library.
Mr. Motley was a 1953 graduate of Alabama State Teachers College with a Bachelor of Science degree in science and mathematics and a 1956 graduate of the Chicago School For Medical Laboratory Technicians. He was a former instructor and supervisor of student doctors at Chi-cago Osteopathic Hospital and College from 1958 to 1961. He went on to own and direct the Westside Clinical Laboratory form 1964 to 1975. In 1976, he earned his masters degree in com-prehensive health planning from the Governors State University in University Park, IL. From 1975 through 1988, Mr. Motley was a Teacher and assistant principal in the Chicago public school system. He was co-owner and operator with his wife of Motley & Motley Consulting Services, Ebony Heritage Gifts, and the Westside Clinical Laboratory
Mr. Motley served as a member of the Park Forest Health Council; NAACP Youth Council, both as advisor and director, advisory committee for Heart Disease Prevention Program, president of the Illinois Association of Clinical Laboratories, and was the recipient of their Public Health Service Award. He has been a member of the NAACP, National Association of Civilian Con-servation Corps Alumni, Illinois State University Scholarship Program, Brookport Boosters Club, Brookport Senior Citizens, and Brookport Betterment Committee, where he served as chairman of Leisure and Cultural division and acted as head of the library committee. Mr. Motley was also on committees At Shawnee Community College, Paducah Community College and the Association of Massac County Black Teachers and Students, and was very active in the American Legion Lester Reynolds Post #523 in Brookport, Illinois.

He was preceded in death by his wife Melba L. Rice Motley, his parents John and Rosia Motley, his two (2) sons Christopher and Myke Motley, and his two (2) sisters Cora M. Scott and Ester Foster.
