Obituary

Almeta M. Hunt of Paducah passed away Sunday, June 25, 2023, 6:18 a.m., at the Parkview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center of Paducah.  She was 93 years old.

Almeta Hunt has had an "INCREDIBLE" journey.  She  was gifted with music and had served in churches all of her life.  She had given of her time and talent to many soloists of this city, several choirs and groups and to many churches.  She had sown seeds for other musicians throughout the city.  For many years she ministered with no thought of recognition.

At the age of five, she began taking music.  She held her first recital when she was in the fifth grade.  At 10 years of age, she played for Harrison Street Missionary Baptist Church Sunday School and at age 17, she played for Eighth Street (now Ninth Street Tabernacle Ministries) while serving under five ministers.

For 12 years, she served as the Director of Music and organist for Harrison Street Missionary Baptist Church.  Mrs. Hunt helped organize and was a musician for several years for the Interdenominational Union Choir.

Almeta was a graduate of the former Lincoln High School and West Kentucky Vocational School.  She was a retiree as an inventory control clerk with General Aniline and Film (GAF) Corporation of Calvert City, KY.

In 1973, she joined Washington Street Missionary Baptist Church.  Her services in the music department span 38 years, where she retired as a musician in April, 2011.  One of her greatest delights was accompanying the late great Velma Homack, who was her mentor.  She continued to serve the church as a ministry leader.  Mrs. Hunt helped organize and was musician for several years for the Interdenominational Union Choir.

She was the music developer for the first "SALUTE TO BLACK MUSIC" for the W.C. Young Community Board where she was a 35-year member of the Board of Directors.

Almeta served as musician for Queen Esther Chapter No.4, Order Eastern Star, and was past musician for the Kentucky State Assembly, Order of the Golden Circle and Daughters of Isis.

Like Esther, she was grateful to God and realized that her service for Him is the gift that she offered back to Him for all of His benefits towards her. She was also thankful to everyone who played a part in her development in the field of music and for "THIS DAY THAT THE LORD HAS MADE!"

She is survived by One Sister , Carol Terry of Fort Worth TX; One Sister-In-Law , Merlene Kelly of Paducah, KY; Several Nieces, Nephews, Cousins, Caregivers, and Friends.

She was preceded in death by her son, Morris Stanley Finley; her parents, Robert Kelly and Freddie Mae Stone Kelly and her adopted parents, Ben Mills and Hallie Roberts; her siblings Harland Kelly, Robert Kelly, Jr., Lenard Kelly, Billie Jean Fuqua, Georgia Mae Priddy, Ella Allen, Anna Lee Lasiter, Gladys Frizell, and adopted sister Elizabeth Archer.

Funeral arrangements are scheduled for Thursday, July 6, 2023, 6:00 p.m., at Washington Street Missionary Baptist Church with Reverend Raynarldo Henderson officiating.  Burial will follow on Friday, July 7, 2023, 10:00 a.m., in Maplelawn Park Cemetery.
